A letter from 1Lt Jeanine McDonnell:

Dear Veteran,

I hope you are enjoying a great Memorial Day. Today is the unofficial start of summer, and Virginians everywhere are cooking out or hitting the pool, myself included!

As we enjoy time with our friends and family, there is something we shouldn't forget: the real meaning of this day. On Memorial Day we remember those brave Americans who have given their all so that we may live in peace. Freedom is not free.

I was honored to continue my family's tradition of military service. My Grandfather served in the Air Force, retiring in 1964. My dad served for 21 years in the Army, active and reserve. Like my Dad, I went to Notre Dame on an Army ROTC scholarship. Just as it was for him, my opportunity to gain a higher education came with my commitment to serve our country.

In October 2005, I left for a one-year tour of duty in Iraq. It's alright, not a lot was going on at the time, just Dad's race for Attorney General! Dad won that race, but I didn't see him or the rest of my family again until the next June when I returned for my two week R&R leave.

During my one year in Iraq, I led a Signal Corps platoon based at Camp Victory in Baghdad that traveled all over the country. I served with the bravest and best people I've ever known. I was fortunate to return to my family and friends after one year. Sadly, many other brave Americans did not. They gave their all in the sands and mountains of Iraq and Afghanistan in defense of our nation. They continued the unbroken thread of valor that is woven throughout the history of America. I think about them everyday.

Today, I hope you will join me, my Dad, my Grandfather, and every American in pausing to remember the reason for this day. If you see a veteran, take a minute to say thanks. If you see a service member, stop a moment to let them know what their sacrifice means. Let's never forget our heroes. Let's never forget that freedom isn't free.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day!

Jeanine

Statement of Attorney General Bob McDonnell on the day before Veterans Day 2008:

"Tomorrow, our nation remembers all those who have served bravely in our military. An unbroken line of courageous service in defense of our freedom extends from Valley Forge to Gettysburg, from Chateau-Thierry to Midway, from the Chosin Reservoir to Da Nang, and from Kabul to Baghdad. The service of our fellow Americans has given us the greatest nation the world has ever known, and secured the liberty that we all too easily take for granted. Tomorrow, on the 11th day of the 11th month, we pay tribute and remember those who served. However, we must remember our veterans every day, in the policies we promote, the laws we pass, and the help we provide. Our freedom has been secured through their uncommon bravery. Our veterans have served us, we must never fail to serve them."

McDonnell Calls for Election Reforms in Virginia to help Military Voters:

- Absentee Ballot Measure: The Attorney General is proposing legislation to ensure that absentee ballots are sent expeditiously to the voter to allow sufficient time for voting absentee, including by overseas military members. During this election some absentee ballots were sent to voters too late for their timely return, resulting in litigation. In addition, the Attorney General will strongly support Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling's legislation to ensure that all overseas ballots cast by military members are counted by removing the language in state law requiring the address and signature of a witness to the voter's signature, which conflicts with the federal law. This statute became a matter of much controversy, and was ultimately resolved by an opinion of the Attorney General.
